65 Exciting Things You Can Do With the Apple Watch is a post by Xavier Lanier from Gotta Be Mobile.

Right out of the box, an Apple Watch can help keep you healthy, deliver notifications, make calls, send texts, run simple apps, and even save your life. But the real magic happens when you install apps and personalize your Apple Watch to help you achieve exactly what you hope to do in any given day.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly what the Apple Watch can do in a variety of settings. Some of them may sound obvious to long-time Apple Watch users, but we promise there are some cool things listed below that you’ve never tried since the Apple Watch and WatchOS are constantly evolving.

Almost all recent Apple Watch models can do everything listed below, but some of the features are exclusive to more recent Apple Watch models. If you are using an Apple Watch that’s a few years old and want to be able to do everything listed in this guide, you may need to upgrade to the newest Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch 8, or Apple Watch Ultra.

The Apple Watch is more than a miniaturized iPhone on your wrist. When you understand what you can do with the Apple Watch it becomes an amazing tool to help you get through your day, be more productive, lose weight, and even save money.

Your Apple Watch can do more than anyone likely needs. But just about everyone should get to know the basic Apple Watch features that are at its core. However, a lot of people don’t make use of the Apple Watch’s best features. This Apple Watch series aren’t the only watches that connect to the iPhone, but they are the best for most people.

What Can the Apple Watch Do with watchOS 9?

With watchOS 9, there are more workout views, a new compass layout, improved medications reminders, better sleep tracking, and more dynamic watch faces. These, combined with many other watchOS 9 features, means you can do more with your Apple Watch than ever, and rely less on your iPhone. That’s important for those that aren’t allowed to or aren’t able to pull out their iPhones whenever they choose. There are more details within each of the sections below.

Communicating Quickly

1.) Answer Calls on the Apple Watch:

You can answer phone calls on your Apple Watch, using it as a small Bluetooth speakerphone. There’s no need to pull out your iPhone for shorter calls thanks to the Apple Watch’s built-in microphone and speaker. Just keep in mind that those nearby may be able to hear your caller and the speakerphone on the Apple Watch isn’t nearly as loud as the iPhone’s.

You can also use your Apple Watch to quickly let callers know that you can’t talk at the moment by tapping one of your pre-set replies, such as “Sorry, I can’t talk right now.”

2.) Place Calls from Your Apple Watch

You can place calls from your Apple Watch in a flash. All you have to do is hold the Apple Watch’s crown down to activate Siri and ask your watch to call a contact. If you are dialing a number that isn’t in your contact list, then you can also tap it into your Apple Watch using an on-screen keypad.

If you have an Apple Watch GPS + Cellular, you can make or receive calls on your Apple Watch, even when your  iPhone isn’t nearby. This requires adding the watch to your plan for about $10 per month with your wireless carrier. The Apple Watch Ultra comes with the cellular feature baked in. If you want to make calls from other models, you need to plan ahead and make sure you buy a cellular model as there’s no way to upgrade down the road.

3.) Call 911 in Two Steps

In an emergency, the Apple Watch makes it fast and easy to call for help. All you need to do is hold down the side button for a few seconds until three options pop up. Sliding the SOS icon to the right will activate an emergency call. Regardless of where in the world you are, the Apple Watch will call the appropriate phone number for emergency services. While you may be used to dialing 911, the Apple Watch is smart enough to dial the proper number and even key in any confirmation number local authorities require.

4.) View and Reply to Texts and iMessages on Your Wrist

Text messages and iMessages instantly appear on your wrist so you don’t have to take your phone out of your pocket. You can also reply quickly with canned messages, emojis, Siri or by scribbling letter by letter what you want to say. The canned messages often pick up on the context of a text so that you can tap on an option that someone gives you.

You can also see recent conversations in the Messages app on the Apple Watch. This works with both iMessages and text messages.

5). Send Facebook Messages

Facebook Messenger is a popular app for staying in touch with family, friends and groups. You can receive Facebook Messages on your Apple Watch and even reply with with text, emoji, a thumbs up, your location or a custom message using the microphone to dictate. If you rely on Facebook Messages to stay in touch, this is an awesome feature. Facebook Messenger supports the scribble reply feature so you can reply even when you can’t talk.

6) Use the Apple Watch as a Translator

Apple Watch iTranslate App Spanish English

You can use your Apple Watch as a translator so that you can talk with people you don’t share a common language with. There is even an offline mode to use when you are traveling and don’t have a cellular connection.

iTranslate is a free app that offers in-app purchases to unlock some additional features. The app allows you to translate between more than 100 languages. The app translates quickly and allows the person you’re communicating with to read what you said in their native language. There’s also an option to have the Apple Watch speak the translations out loud.

7. Apple Watches Can be Walkie Talkies

You can use your Apple Watch as a walkie talkie to communicate with friends and families when you are out and about. The Walkie Talkie app on the Apple Watch allows you to send audio messages that automatically play when the recipients are marked as available.  This allows you to quickly chat back and forth with friends during the day or connect with them when you are at an event like a concert easily. Some people use this feature like an intercom at home.

8. Check Your Email

Apple Watch Mail app Can Check Delete email

Is your email app your second home? If so, the Apple Watch will either be the best thing to happen or a gateway to checking your email even more often. You can get Mail notifications on your wrist, read flag, delete and easily open on the iPhone for a longer reply. This works inside the Mail app for iPhone.

There isn’t a Gmail app for Apple Watch, but you can get Gmail notifications. You won’t necessarily get a notification for each and every email that comes in, but it will mirror what you see on your iPhone.

9. Send Memojis on Apple Watch

Apple Watch Memoji

You can send Memojis from your Apple Watch, as well as standard emoji. You can’t animate the Memoji or make a specific face like you can on the iPhone, but you can send the Memoji that are standard on the iPhone from your watch.

10. Send Apple Watch Drawings to Friends

You can sketch out a small drawing with your finger on your Apple Watch and send it to a friend’s Apple Watch. The only limits are your imagination, artistic skill, and of course the screen size. The drawing will come across as an animated sketch and your friend can respond with another drawing. This drawings will also go directly to iPhones.

11. Share Your Heartbeat

The Apple Watch can track your heart rate for fitness activities, but that’s not all the sensors can do. You can share your heartbeat with a loved one as a message.  When you do this a small animation shows on-screen to show your heartbeat directly to another Apple watch. Apple calls this, “a simple intimate way to tell someone how you feel.”

This isn’t something that most Apple Watch users will use often, but it’s a cool way to send a message to someone you love to let them know you are thinking about them.

Apple Watch Can Help Keep You Healthy and Safe

1. Monitor Safe Hearing Levels

The Apple Watch comes with a noise app that tracks how loud your environment is. This allows you to know if you are in a setting where audio is at a dangerous level so you can get hearing protection or move away from the loud sources of noise. You can expect to get alerts in loud environments like constructions sites, rock concerts, and fireworks shows.  You will also see alerts for things you might not think will damage your hearing, such as sustained noise at volumes that aren’t as jarring.

2. Check and Track Blood Oxygen Levels

The Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, and Ultra include a sensor that tracks your blood oxygen levels. This is especially useful for those who need to monitor their blood oxygen levels due to illnesses such as Asthma, Influenza, and COVID-19.

The more recent Apple Watches will take blood oxygen level readings throughout the day, which means you can instantly see your most recent reading on your Apple Watch’s Blood Oxygen app. If you want a current blood oxygen level reading it 15 seconds to take a new one.  You can see a running history of your blood oxygen levels in your iPhone’s Health app.

3. Monitor Your Heart Rate

Apple Watch heart rate Can track Automatically

The Apple Watch heart rate monitor is credited with saving the life of a teen and of a 62 year old.

The Apple Watch uses sensors on the back of the Apple Watch to check your heart rate automatically throughout the day. Your current heart rate, resting heart rate, and walking average are all instantly viewable on your Apple Watch by tapping the Heart Rate app. Your heart rate data is stored in the Apple Health app on your iPhone so you can look at trends and see more details.

When you are exercising, you can see the heart rate at all times on your Apple Watch if you start a workout.

4. Take an Electrocardiogram (ECG)

ECG Apple Watch Can Take Just 30 SecondsThe Apple Watch Series 4 and newer (except SE models) can take Electrocardiograms (ECG) to detect your heart health. An ECG used to be something that required a visit to a medical provider, but you can now check your heart’s rhythm in just 30 seconds with your Apple Watch. All you need to do is launch the ECG app and hold your finger to the Digital Crown. When the scan is done it will show you whether your heart shows signs of arterial fibrulation (afib).

5. Track Your Fitness

The Apple Watch uses various sensors to monitor your movement and track your progress towards healthy goals that the Apple Watch or an Apple Watch app will help you set.

You can see this progress across three categories; movement, exercise and time spent standing. Movement measures calories burned, exercise is when you hit 30 minutes of exercise in a day, and the stand section aims to make you less sedentary. The watch will alert you to stand up if you sit for too long and nudge you towards movement and exercise goals.

You can adjust your move goal by pressing hard on the screen when in the Activity App. You can also see the fitness information on your iPhone in the Health app.

6. Track Your Runs

The Apple Watch can use its built-in GPS to track where you runs, even if you don’t bring your iPhone with you. You can view your detailed runs on a map on your iPhone after your run so you can decide if you want to repeat the route in the future or not.

7. Track Your Cycle

You can easily track your cycle and get alerts on your Apple Watch. The app uses information you enter on your last period  to help predict the start of your next period.

You can see this information on your Apple Watch and log flow as well as symptoms of your period.

8. Track Your Sleep

All recent Apple Watch models include built-in sleep tracking features that make sure you get to bed on time, wake up on time, and help improve your quality of sleep. All you need to do is enter some basic info in the Sleep app and wear your Apple Watch to sleep.  The Apple Watch will track how much time you spend in each stage of sleep and at what time you hit each stage.

Use the Apple Watch to Get Around

1. Use the Apple Watch as a Compass

Apple Watch Compass using to get around

Select Watch Faces and  the standalone Compass app is a standalone app can show you the which way you’re facing, the incline, elevation and your latitude and longitude. This is a cool feature to try at least a few times, especially if you’re directionally challenged. For more complicated navigation, there are countless watch apps that use the Apple Watch Compass to assist you navigate on land, water, or even sky.

2. Use the Apple Watch as a Car Key

You can use your Apple Watch  as a key for most newer BMWs and select Hyundai and KIA models.  That means you can open your cars’ doors and start the ignition by just tapping on your watch’s side button a couple of times.  Almost all BMW models built since July 2020 support the Apple key feature, with Hyundai and Kia compatibility much more limited.

Apple Watch Productivity Features

1. Use Your Apple Watch as a Calculator

The Apple Watch can be used as a calculator through Siri or the calculator app. The built-in app can help you solve basic math problems and settle restaurant bills. The Apple Watch calculator app has a TIP calculator that lets you put in the total due and adjust the percentage of tip you’d like to leave. It also gives you the option to select the number of people splitting the bill to give you a precise number for each person to pay.

2. Record a Voice Memo or Conversation

You can use your Apple Watch to record a Voice Memo  with its built-in microphone. This means your Apple Watch can quickly record your thoughts before you forget them, important meetings and conversations without having to rely on your iPhone. All you need to do is open the app by selecting it from the app screen or by asking Siri to open the Voice Memos app. To start recording, all you need to do is tap the red button. Voice Memos are stored in iCloud and synced to your other Apple devices for playback and sharing.

3. Unlock Your MacBook and Passwords

With Auto Unlock enabled on your MacBook, you can quickly unlock it while wearing your Apple Watch. That means you won’t need to type in your password every time your MacBook goes to sleep. You can also use your Apple Watch to automatically unlock your stored Passwords and password-protected Notes.

Apple Watch Entertainment Features:

Listen to Podcasts on the Apple Watch:

Apple includes the Podcasts app on the Apple Watch. You can sync podcasts to the Apple Watch based on the ones you listen to on your iPhone when the watch is on its charger. If you are mobile you can stream the latest episodes on LTE or on WiFi.  You will to use your AirPods to listen as Podcasts won’t play back on the Apple Watch’s built-in speaker.

Other Things the Apple Watch Can Do

1. Stay Quiet in a Movie Theater

You can tell your Apple Watch not to respond to hand movements while you are at the movies. This keeps your Apple Watch from lighting up when you move your arm. With this mode, the watch noises also stop, so you can enjoy the movie without disturbing others. You will still get notifications and the watch will vibrate so you know if something important is happening, it’s just less likely to annoy people around you.

To enable this, just swipe up from the Apple Watch home screen, and you’ll see a pair of theater masks.  Tap on the masks to turn on Theater mode. When you are done, tap on it again to turn it off.

2. Tell You The Time

There’s more than one way for the Apple Watch to tell you the time. While the most obvious way is to just look at your wrist, there are a few other ways to tell time on the Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch can speak the time to you by tapping the watch face with two fingers. You can also set your Apple Watch to play hourly chimes.   The Apple Watch can also tap out the time on your wrist using its haptic engine.

Answer Calls on the Apple Watch

Answer Calls on the Apple Watch

You can answer a call on your Apple Watch using it as a small Bluetooth speakerphone. You only want to use this for shorter calls because the audio quality isn't as good as when you are talking on speakerphone on your iPhone.

The Apple Watch only allows you to answer your calls on Speakerphone, so you won't want to use this all the time. It is very handy when you are working on a project or busy with your hands. Definitely be conscious of where you are taking calls. If you wouldn't talk on speakerphone, you shouldn't talk on your Apple Watch.

If you buy the new Apple Watch with LTE, you can even make calls on the Apple Watch without your iPhone nearby. This requires adding the watch to your plan for $10 a month. You cannot answer a FaceTime video call on the Apple Watch.

Google is ready to take another shot at the smartwatch. After showing off new features in Android Wear 2.0 back in 2016, LG and Google recently unveiled two new watches with the latest software. However, current owners are wondering when their watch will get the Android Wear 2.0 update.

The brand new LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style are the first Android Wear 2.0 devices, and they’re coming soon. Both are already listed at popular retailers and carriers like Verizon.

LG’s new watches look good, but they’re also pretty expensive. As a result many will keep what they already have. This brings us to the big question. What smartwatches will get updated to Android Wear 2.0 in the near future? A full list can be found below.

LGWatchStyleSport-all

Over the past few years some excellent smartwatches have been released. However, they’re running on old and outdated software, not to mention lacking in features. That’s all about to change though.

Android Wear 2.0 Updates

Without further delay, this is the full list of watches that will get the update to Android Wear 2.0 in the near future.

  • ASUS ZenWatch 2
  • ASUS ZenWatch 3
  • Casio Smart Outdoor Watch
  • Casio PRO TREK Smart
  • Fossil Q Wander
  • Fossil Q Marshal
  • Fossil Q Founder
  • Huawei Watch
  • Huawei Watch Ladies
  • LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE
  • LG Watch Urbane
  • LG G Watch R
  • Moto 360 (2nd Gen.)
  • Moto 360 Sport
  • Michael Kors Access Bradshaw Smartwatch
  • Michael Kors Access Dylan Smartwatch
  • New Balance RunIQ
  • Nixon Mission
  • Polar M600
  • Tag Heuer Connected

Of course some of the most popular watches make the list. Including the newer Moto 360, the ASUS ZenWatch 2/3, anything recent from Huawei and the popular fashionable options from Michael Kors. First generation devices like the original Moto 360 or LG G Watch will be left out. That said, they are pretty old and were released in 2014.

Also, we don’t have an exact timeframe as to when these updates will be released. Previously most watches received updates around the same time, with Google pushing Wear updates out to all. As soon as we have more details or a time table to watch we’ll confirm the details.

Here’s a quick video recently released by Google. It details a few of the many new features you can expect to enjoy on Android Wear 2.0 in the near future.

Once Android Wear 2.0 arrives owners can expect more informative watch faces, and lots of customization or personalization. An improved Google Fit with better workouts, new ways to use apps, and more features like Android Pay on Wear. Additionally, the Google Assistant is now built-in. Meaning users can make the most of every minute, as their watch tells them the time in style.

While the smartwatch market as a whole hasn’t taken off as much as expected, they’re still popular. Samsung offers great watches, and the Apple Watch is still an exciting option for consumers. As a result Google has overhauled their entire user interface for watches and wearable devices.

The smartwatch market has been slowly losing momentum, but that should all change in early February. At the end of 2016 Google confirmed the company was working hard on two high-end flagship Android Wear smartwatches for this year. Now, additional details are starting to emerge.

Since being released in 2014 Android Wear smartwatches have been few and far in-between. The Moto 360 was successful but that’s about it. Most manufacturers decided to skip 2016 completely, with no new releases. However, leaks suggest Google and LG will debut two stunning Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch options soon.

For months on end we’ve been hearing rumors that Google themselves are building a pair of premium watches. In December Google confirmed it, although they won’t be branded as Pixel or Nexus devices. Instead, they look to be working with LG in an effort to showcase their latest wearable.

According to The Verge, who hosted an interview with Android Wear manager and Google employee Jeff Chang, big things are coming. During the interview Jeff had a lot to say about Android Wear, smartwatches as a whole, and where things are headed.

Since then, we’ve been waiting for more information, and now it has arrived. Here’s what we know about Google’s upcoming smartwatch partnership.

Google Smartwatch Details

Google’s employee went on to say these won’t be “Pixel or Nexus” branded watches. Instead, they are coming from a well-known company who has released Android Wear watches in the past. Adding fuel to the fire, VentureBeat claims it will be two LG smartwatch options.

Furthermore, these two high-end watches will be the first to run on the new and improved Android Wear 2.0 software update. Bringing loads of improvements to wearables and our wrist. Additionally, both will support Android Pay for mobile payments, along with the Google Assistant.

Release Date

According to popular leakster Evan Blass, Google will release Android Wear 2.0 on February 9th at the LG Watch launch event.

On that day LG and Google will unveil two devices that look similar to the render above. Following will be a global release of Android Wear 2.0 over the course of a week or two.

Rumors claim both will be impressive new smartwatches. One called the LG Watch Sport, and a smaller more affordable and stylish LG Watch Style. It’s said both will have a digital crown similar to the Apple Watch, but still have a touchscreen at the same time. This will be the smartwatch worth buying in 2017.

All said and done we still don’t know too much right now. However, if February 9th truly is the day more information should surface soon. For now, we’ll have to wait for additional details to be sure. Either way, stay tuned for more details and be on the lookout for two stunning Android Wear 2.0 watches by Google and LG.

When it comes to buying a smartwatch there are countless options available, but finding something stylish and petite for women is hard to find. The new Moto 360 2nd Gen has a smaller option for women, but today Huawei released two brand new Android Wear smartwatches specifically with the ladies in mind.

The Huawei Smartwatch running Google’s latest Android Wear software was released earlier this year, and is arguably one of the best smartwatches on the market. It has a great design, good styling, a full round face and more, but it’s about to get even better with thin straps and Swarovski crystals.

Today at CES 2016 Huawei unveiled two more versions of the Huawei Watch. They’ll officially be called the Huawei Watch “Elegant” and “Jewel” with the last one having some crystals and added flair for those who want a flashy watch. Here’s what we know so far.

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 10.50.59 AM

Live in Las Vegas for CES 2016 Huawei announced both new watches, but didn’t have too many other details to share at the show. What we do know though, is one of the fanciest and best looking Android Wear smartwatches is now targeting women specifically. Finally giving the ladies something worth buying, that has the elegance and style to go with it, rather than look like everything else.

The new Huawei Watch Elegant and Jewel are very similar to Huawei’s current Android Wear smartwatch, but actually slightly larger. It comes in 2mm bigger with a 1.4-inch display, which should look even better than before, but it’s the rest of the watch that makes it geared for women.

Huawei-watch-women

Shown above are both of Huawei’s new Android Wear smartwatch options for women. The Elegant model on the left has the same overall specs and design as the original, but a few key changes for ladies. Those being a beautiful gold housing, thinner watch straps with a more feminine design and material, and there are even pre-loaded watch faces that aren’t as “nerdy” like most Android Wear watches available today.

Then of course we have the new Huawei Watch Jewel, which as you can expect by the name, actually has Jewels on the front bezel. This makes it one of the best looking Android Wear watches I’ve seen to date, but sadly it’s only for women. The front is covered in Swarovski crystals, or Jewels, to give it added styling. It comes with the same gold casing, 18mm lugs for the watch straps, but thin and stylish watch straps for women.

Huawei has some pretty odd names for these two new watches, but there’s no arguing they look pretty good. It’s worth nothing that both watches will come pre-loaded with the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow version of Android Wear, and 10 specifically designed “exclusive feminine” watch faces. Rather than the typical watch faces available on all current watches, and the regular Huawei Watch.

The current Huawei Watch retails for $349 and up, and comes with a few different options for the band, and we’re expecting something similar for these women models. Huawei stated they’ll be available in Q1 of 2016, but had no exact release date or pricing to announce at this time. Stay tuned for more details.

The Apple Watch can completely change your mobile existence and is worth every penny of its $349 price tag for just three of its countless features. Forget about any problems you may have heard, those are easily offset by how easy the Apple Watch is to use, how convenient it makes daily tasks and, most importantly, how it can help you achieve your health goals. After living with this device for a month, you’ll probably go from ‘Why do I need an Apple Watch,’ to ‘How can I live without the Apple Watch.’

The Apple Watch earns a GottaBeMobile Editor’s Choice award for being the most fully-baked wearable device we’ve used so far. It just might be the ultimate iPhone accessory.

GBM-Editors-Choice-AwardSpending $349 or more for an Apple Watch might sound excessive to some, especially those that haven’t bought a watch in years, but it’s an excellent buy once you consider how many devices it replaces and how much time and effort it can save.

Apple does need to iron out some bugs and some people might be better off waiting for the next version of the Apple Watch, especially if they’re on a tight budget. Below we’ll discuss all of these issues and help you decide if the Apple Watch is right for you and why we think the cheapest models offer the most value.

Pros:

  • Battery lasts more than a day
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Activity tracking is accurate
  • Apple Pay & Passbook are excellent
  • Notifications and Glances
  • Siri on Your Wrist

Cons:

  • Apps are not iPhone quality
  • No sleep tracking
  • Some features require friends to own an Apple Watch

Watch the Apple Watch review video above for a demonstration of how I’m using the Apple Watch, which apps are most useful and what it’s like to have Siri on your wrist.

The Apple Watch delivers convenience, healthy reminders and ease of use.

The Apple Watch delivers convenience, healthy reminders and ease of use.

So what am I actually using the Apple Watch for? A lot more than I expected when I bought it. It’s helped me lose 20 pound, work more effectively and cutting down on distractions.

I despise interruptions to work so I only allow Apple Watch notifications for a small group of services. It is possible to check email on the Apple Watch, but I get too much email to manage on a small screen on my wrist. I also turned off Facebook and Google chat notifications.

The Apple Watch knows when it is on your wrist so it will not buzz with notifications when you take it off. It also does a fantastic job of knowing when to notify me of something on the iPhone and when to inform me on the watch. Apple’s systems are smart enough to know when you’re looking at your iPhone and skips sending duplicate notifications to your Apple Watch.  This carries over to my MacBook as well, with the Apple Watch sometimes notifying me of an iMessage that is in Messages on Mac but not read.

Notifications deliver information you need immediately, glances offer details that you might need.

Notifications deliver information you need immediately, glances offer details that you might need.

I use Slack, Messages, Facebook Messages and a small handful of other apps to send alerts to my wrist, while others will only show on my iPhone. I can respond to many urgent notifications using Siri or tapping on a response that matches the situation. The Apple Watch is smart enough to detect when someone proposes a question, and it can show the appropriate replies. For instance, a friend asked if I was parked or inside, and the Apple Watch listed Parked or Inside as the first two canned options for a reply.

A swipe up from the bottom reveals Apple Watch glances, which are things you may want to see but are not notifications. A glance will not interrupt you, but can show important information. I rely on the glances below almost every day.

  • Quick access to settings
  • Currently playing music
  • Heart Rate
  • Battery Life
  • Activity
  • Calendar
  • Weather
  • Maps
  • World Clock
  • Dark Sky for rain and remaining daylight

Most of these load quickly, but the map and weather occasionally suffer from the same slow loading problem as apps.

You can also use Siri on the Apple Watch to start calls, send messages and for other activities. Using Siri on my wrist is incredibly convenient while shopping or driving and there is no need to unlock the iPhone to complete a task.

Dictation works to enter text into a variety of apps, so you don’t need to try to type anything on a small Apple Watch keyboard.

Apple Watch Apps are not up to iPhone level.

Apple Watch Apps are not up to iPhone level.

Apple Watch apps are slow to load and offer limited functionality compared to iPhone apps. I enjoy using the Apple Watch to control my Hue lights, check my calories left in MyFitnesspal and play music. The best Apple watch apps make my life easier with convenient access to simple controls or important information on my wrist. MLB at Bat also delivers easy access to favorite sports scores and team news in situations where I cannot look at my iPhone.

Apple also includes a camera remote that lets you see what your iPhone camera sees right on your wrist. This lets you line up a group photo or take a better selfie. This works with the front facing camera or the rear camera. It is easy to use and works without lag.

The Apple Watch is also a fitness tracker that can track calories burned, steps, workouts, distance traveled and remind you to get up and stand during your day.

Use the Apple Watch to track fitness and health progress.

Use the Apple Watch to track fitness and health progress.

I’m working towards a goal of losing close to 50 pounds, and I’m at 20 pounds down now. I’ve been relying on the iPhone tracker for fitness tracking, but very often I leave my iPhone on my desk and walk throughout the day, which means missed steps. The Apple Watch is helpful in tracking my movement and heart rate, as well as exercise. The Apple Watch fitness tracker may not offer the features a professional athlete needs, but it’s the right mix for regular users.

I used the Apple Watch in the final weeks of training for a Tough Mudder and I found that the Apple Watch is a good fitness companion. While running a 5k for training the Apple Watch tracked the distance within a tenth of a mile of the iPhone and Runkeeper app that my running partner used.

Another part of this is the focus on my overall health. I sit for most of my job every day. Even though I think I get up and move a lot, the Apple Watch taught me that I sit way too much most days. At least once an hour the device reminds me to stand. The daily exercise and movement goals also deliver the motivation I need to go for a walk or a run at night. There is no sleep tracking feature on the Apple Watch.

Passbook on the Apple Watch is even more convenient than on the iPhone.

Passbook on the Apple Watch is even more convenient than on the iPhone.

Passbook and Apple Pay are incredibly more useful on your wrist than on your iPhone. It’s easier to order coffee, show your ticket to a ball game, share a loyalty card and more without handing your iPhone to a stranger. Apple Pay on the Apple Watch is incredibly convenient and is easier than using a debit card, cash or my iPhone.

The Apple Watch isn’t as convenient as a traditional watch if you need to sneak a glance at the time. Raising my hand slightly turns the screen on to show the time and other important information. Apple includes 10 watch faces to choose from, and with many it is possible to customize the color, design and the information that shows on screen.

I prefer to use the Modular watch face that shows the time and five other details that are important to me. With a quick look I can see the date, my calendar and a shared family calendar, the temperature, my activity progress and Apple Watch battery life.

My favorite Apple Watch face shows important information with just a glance.

My favorite Apple Watch face shows important information with just a glance.

The Apple Watch display looks good, but sometimes it can be difficult to tap the app you want to use if that app is near the edge of the screen. Apple adds a Force Touch option that lets you push on the screen harder for more options. This makes it easier to access secondary features in the apps, like choosing a source for music or clearing notifications.

It is easy to see the Apple Watch screen indoors and out in most conditions, even while on the move walking or running. It is possible to sync a playlist to the Apple Watch and pair Bluetooth headphones to it so that I can run and leave the iPhone at home. After several workouts The Apple Watch learns enough about my movement that the iPhone is no longer needed to track distance traveled, even though there is no GPS in the watch.

When driving or walking I often use the built-in navigation tool to get directions on my wrist. The watch uses audio and the taptic vibrations to alert me to left or right turns. Without the need to look at the watch it is easy to know if the next turn is right or left based on the vibrations.

During a month of use the only activity I could not wear the Apple Watch for was a Tough Mudder. This 10-mile event includes multiple areas where I was underwater and the Apple Watch is not waterproof. The watch survived use in the rain without any problems.

The design is comfortable enough to wear all day and the Sport band works just as good at the gym as it does when I dress up. The band is a little looser and shows some bends as it forms to my wrist but there is not significant wear to the band or watch, even while using it for yard work and other activities.

The back of the Apple Watch includes a heart rate monitor and there are options to switch bands.

The back of the Apple Watch includes a heart rate monitor and there are options to switch bands.

After almost a month of use the Apple Watch Sport looks just as good as it did on the first day we took it out of the box. The Stainless Steel Apple Watch scratches easily despite the higher price.

The square-like look of the Apple Watch works and with two sizes most users will not have a problem finding a combination of Apple Watch and band that will fit their wrist. The smart watch features are identical across the three models and the 38mm and 42mm sizes. The 42mm Apple Watch Sport fits my needs with a larger screen slightly better battery life and it is $200 less than the Stainless Steel Apple Watch.

The larger screen is also handy for showing off photos. Users can sync photos to the Apple Watch so that it is easier to show off a short set of photos of your kid, wife or pet without hunting for the right album on your iPhone.

Pressing the side button opens a friends list that makes it easy to send a message, start a call or if the friend owns an Apple Watch communicate in new ways.

The Apple Watch sketches are fun and something that adds humor and a new dimension to conversations. Drawing accurately on the screen is tough at times, but this is a feature that is definitely fun to use. A tap is too close to a Facebook poke to be of real value.

Sharing a heart beat on the Apple Watch is a very personal thing. While testing the Apple Watch I shared my heart beat with a friend and it worked as advertised, but this is not a feature I will use often.

Quickly connect with friends using a tap of the side button on the Apple Watch.

Quickly connect with friends using a tap of the side button on the Apple Watch.

You can also send Apple Watch emoji to anyone, even if they don’t have an Apple Watch. This is another fun feature that is just as entertaining as emoji on the iPhone, and selecting the emoji with the Digital Crown is fun as the emoji faces change with a twist.

Apple Watch battery life lasts more than long enough for a single day of use. Even during heavy weekend use and days that include 30-60 minutes of exercising the Apple Watch rarely dropped below 50% battery life at the end of a day.

The Apple Watch is an essential iPhone accessory for me after just one month of use. The convenience of information on my wrist, motivation to live healthier and features like Siri and Apple Pay more than justify the $349 starting price.

Read: 5 Reasons the Apple Watch Sport is Better

I bought the 42mm Apple Watch Sport for $399 because it is a first generation product that I may decide to upgrade when a new version arrives and because it does not scratch very easily like the Apple Watch in Stainless Steel does. The Apple Watch Sport is also lighter and the sport band keeps it tight during workouts.

The Apple Watch delivers more value than other fitness trackers I’ve used and it feels like a more mature product than the Pebble. The Moto 360 with Android Wear is the closest competition, but the Apple Watch outperforms in ease of use, notifications and convenience.

With a starting price of $349, the Apple Watch doesn’t compete with high-end watches, but it is right up there with fashion watches that department stores sell for $250 to $500. Fashion watches from Michael Kors and Bulova may offer more styles and color combinations for the price. Even with those advantages the Apple Watch features deliver vastly more use for a watch and the Apple Watch build quality is very nice.

17 Things You Didn’t Know the Apple Watch Could Do

Set Your Apple Watch Ahead 5-10 Minutes

If you are always running behind and you are used to setting clocks ahead so that you leave early enough to get there you'll love the Apple Watch.

There is a setting on the Watch that lets you set the Apple Watch time ahead up to 59 minutes fast. Most people will set the watch a few minutes early or 15 minutes early if they are always late.

Alarms and timers should stick to the real-time, but when you look at the time on your Apple Watch you will see the time you want, instead of the real-time.

Here's how to set your Apple Watch ahead so you're always on time.

The Apple Watch release date arrives in April, but Apple is still keeping details about the Apple Watch release under wraps including the exact day and important information about the Apple Watch price. Even though this is not a secret product there are still things many potential buyers want to know about the Apple Watch release and the three Apple Watch versions. In response to reader questions we want to take a look at what we expect from the Apple Watch release in April.

This is the first Apple Watch release, so there is not as much history as with an iPhone or iPad update, but thanks to Tim Cook’s announcement we know when the Apple Watch release will arrive and with an introduction at the iPhone 6 event last year we know much more about the new Apple Watch than we typically do about an Apple product months before the release date.

Tim Cook announced the April Apple Watch release date during the Apple earnings call on January 27, 2015. This delivered a more specific date than the early 2015 timeline Apple stuck with since the original announcement but leaves room for an event and for Apple to continue working on the product.

Pick the Apple Watch face you want, including classics like Mickey.

What you can expect from the Apple Watch release date in April.

We know a lot about the Apple Watch, but many consumers still want to know more about how the Apple Watch fits, the differences between the Apple Watch models and what exactly the Apple Watch will do.

Even though this is the first Apple Watch, there are things we expect from any Apple release. This allows us to share seven things you can expect from the Apple Watch release date.

Apple Watch Release Date Specifics

You can count on an Apple Watch release date during the week. Apple often starts selling hot new mobile products during the week. The iPhone arrives on a Friday and we occasionally see the iPad arrive on a Wednesday.

It is also a given that Apple Stores will open early for the event. Most Apple Stores open at 10 AM during the week, but when a new product arrives the store often opens at 8 AM local time.

There is a chance that the Apple Watch release will heavily favor Apple Store locations over Best Buy and carriers. With multiple models, sizes and colors as well as a new product to explain to consumers Apple may want to handle the initial sales in a controlled environment.

Apple Watch Event

https://youtu.be/y-waTi8BPdk

Apple already announced the Apple Watch in 2014, but they still need to talk about battery life, pricing and accessories and announce the specific release date and pre-orders.

An Apple Watch event in March or April will allow Apple to highlight more of what the Apple Watch can do and show off Apple Watch apps from third-party developers.

Don’t count on as much fanfare as an iPhone launch, but it seems very likely Apple will do more than a press release to announce the exact Apple Watch release date.

Apple Watch Pre-orders

Although Apple doesn’t always offer pre-orders on products we anticipate Apple Watch pre-orders, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo does as well. This will allow consumers to get home delivery of the Apple Watch or possibly reserve one for in store pickup.

You can count on a 12:01 AM Pacific pre-order start time if Apple does offer them, and a pre-orders that sell out quickly. Apple normally continues to take orders, but the release day delivery or day one delivery option will likely disappear soon after orders start.

Expect Shortages

Apple may ship 2.8 million Apple Watches in early 2015 according to a report shared on Apple Insider, but the note also cautions that there may be shortages of key components. This could lead to shortages online and in stores. After a new Apple release we often see consumers struggle to find the product in stock at local stores and online.

We see this happen with the new iPhone every year, the new iPad every year and even with the Moto 360 release in 2014.

Apple Watch Release Problems

Imagine crowds like this where everyone wants to try on multiple Apple Watch models. Lewis Tse Pui Lung / Shutterstock.com

Imagine crowds like this where everyone wants to try on multiple Apple Watch models. Lewis Tse Pui Lung / Shutterstock.com

When it comes time to buy the Apple Watch at an Apple Store, or any other retailer that offers the device, expect some issues as consumers struggle to pick the size and model of the Apple Watch and which band they want to buy. This will lead to an avalanche of customers who want to try on an Apple Watch at the Apple Store, and then who want to try on another version or size and another.

If you want to go hands-on with the Apple Watch and see what all it can do, you will want to avoid the Apple Watch release date at Apple Stores unless Apple delivers a magnificent method to showcase this watch in limited spaces.

Apple Watch Apps

In November Apple shared a tool with developers to start working on Apple Watch Apps, but we may not see a huge selection at release. Apple allows third-party Apple Watch apps, but it typically takes some time and testing before we start to see a huge selection. John Meyer, Found and CEO of Fresco News told CNBC that it may take some time before we see a lot of apps. Part of this is due to a lack of an Apple Watch demo unit to review and test apps on and the need test Apple Watch apps on those. Meyer suggests several months will go by before we start to see really great Apple Watch apps.

There are also many limitations that Apple Watch apps will need to deal with. Cult of Mac shares a collection of things Apple Watch apps can’t do based on the current limitations. Here are some of the most interesting limitations;

  • Non Apple Apps need the iPhone connected
  • Can’t Open an App on the iPhone
  • Limited access to Control
  • No Force Touch and No Taptic Vibrations
  • No Heart Rate Monitor or NFC Access
  • Microphone is Only for Dictation

There are several other limitations and for now you will need to rely on the Apple Watch faces that Apple makes available as there is no mechanism for buying new Apple Watch faces. And you can only pair the Apple Watch to one iPhone.

Apple Watch Accessories

Count on a small selection of Apple Watch accessories at release, as we are already seeing several chargers up for pre-order and early sale. The Bandstand Apple Watch Dock is on a waiting list, and there are many others including cases, covers and watch bands.

Expect a lot of Apple Watch accessories, but a small selection on day one.

Expect a lot of Apple Watch accessories, but a small selection on day one.

In the months after the Apple Watch release we expect to see an uptick in the number of Apple Watch accessories especially Apple Watch bands that are easy to swap out by pressing buttons on the button of the device. While Android smart watches like the Moto 360 require a more work to switch bands, it looks like you will only need to press two buttons to switch Apple Watch bands. Expect loads of customization options here.

Apple Watch Release Not Expected Until After Valentine’s Day is a post by Craig Lloyd from Gotta Be Mobile.

Apple finally announced and unveiled its extremely hyped smartwatch during the company’s iPhone 6 event earlier this month. However, Tim Cook and company didn’t give us a release date other than at some point in early 2015. According to the latest reports, we probably won’t see the Apple Watch release until after Valentine’s Day.

According to The Information, Apple employees and partners expected the smartwatch to be released in 2014, but issues with the project has apparently pushed that date back — a date in which these employees and partners agree won’t be before Valentine’s Day.

In fact, one source who is involved in shipping the Apple Watch said that the Cupertino-based company would be “lucky to ship it by Valentine’s Day.”

Apple is usually known for launching big new products ahead of an upcoming shopping season, but the Apple Watch will be an exception, releasing at some point early next year. Valentine’s Day would be the only other shopping season alternatives, but if these new reports are correct, Apple won’t even have its watch out by then.

The Apple Watch will start at a steep $349 and will come in three different styles: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition. There are still quite a few details about the device that we don’t know about yet, including the release date. Also, no word on battery life or connectivity options, which is a bit odd, but we’re guessing we’ll hear about that soon enough, possibly at Apple’s iPad event next month.

Apple Watch features

While the company has taken the “i” prefix out of the name, that doesn’t mean it loses its Apple value. The device’s design is very similar to that of Apple’s other iOS products, and it even runs a modified version of iOS.

However, Cook has said that the company didn’t just shrink down the iPhone’s user interface and strap it to your wrist. Instead, the touchscreen UI is much different on the Watch than on an iPhone.

For example, instead of using pinch-to-zoom on the tiny touchscreen on the Watch, you use a small dial that you turn in order to zoom in and out while viewing maps or otherwise. Pressing the dial, which Apple calls the “digital crown,” will take you back to the home screen.

The touch screen is a rather unique one. For starters, it uses sapphire glass, which was rumored in the past of course, but the display also senses pressure, which means that it can tell the difference between a “tap” and a “press,” and it’s essentially like the difference between a left-click and right-click on a computer mouse.

This is the base Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch is quite the fitness device as well, as it has a myriad of sensors on the bottom to record your heart rate and other vitals, and it borrows the GPS signal from your iPhone for running or cycling apps to use. It looks like it’ll track your fitness activities better than most wearable devices can, but we’ll have to test it out first before we make such claims.

What’s perhaps most impressive is that the Watch will analyze the text of a message and will provide you with pre-determined answers to allow you to easily answer back with just a tap. Otherwise, you can talk to the device and have it translate that into text.

Other features include the ability to tweet from the Watch and even unlock hotel room doors with a quick wave at select SPG hotels. A ton of apps are getting support for the device, so you’ll be able to do a ton of stuff, like look up scores, browse Pinterest and even adjust your Nest thermostat.

The USA vs Belgium live stream is the way millions of USA fans will watch today’s important match, which determines if the United States Mens National Soccer Team will progress further in World Cup 2014 tournament play. Several sources will offer a USA vs Belgium live stream, which are free with a cable or satellite subscription and one sneaky option that will let you watch the USA vs Belgium 2014 game even if you don’t have cable.

Here is a quick look at when the game starts and the best options to listen to or watch the USA vs Belgium live on a computer, iPhone, Android or iPad. We’ll also show you the fastest way to check the USA vs Belgium score.

Here's everything you need to know to watch USA vs Belgium live at work.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch USA vs Belgium live at work.

Unfortunately the USA vs Belgium game time is right at the end of the workday on the East Coast and right after lunch on the West coast, so pretty much any fan who wants to watch USA vs Belgium at work will need to use an app or streaming service. Budget about two-hours to watch the full USA vs Belgium 2014 matchup with 45 minute halves, half time and stoppage time for injuries.

Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore and the rest of the United States Mens National Soccer Team led by Coach Juergen Klinsmann take on Belgium. USA comes in with one win in the last five matches against Belgium, hoping to advance with a top-notch performance.

USA vs Belgium Live Stream

Fans need to use one of three options to watch the USA vs Belgium live. If you already pay for a cable or satellite subscription the option is easy, but if you don’t you will need to plan and use a little trickery to watch live.

USA vs Belgium live on WatchESPN

ESPN airs the USA vs Belgium match on TV and on the WatchESPN app. This free app requires a subscription to a cable or satellite company. It is included free with a paid subscription on Time Warner, Comcast and many others, but not on DirecTV.

You can follow these instructions to download the WatchESPN app and use it to watch USA vs Belgium live at work or anywhere you can get an internet connection.

During the last match WatchESPN was down for part of the game, if that happens you will need to jump over toe the next option, or wait a few minutes.

"I believe that we will win," is the Team USA chant.

USA vs Belgium Live on Univision Desportes

If you are a DirecTV subscriber or you cannot get in to Watch ESPN, Univision Desportes is the best USA vs Belgium live stream option. You will still need to log in to watch, but during the last game this service did not go down.

The only downside to this option is that the announcers provide commentary in Spanish. If you can’t turn the volume up at work this isn’t a big deal. You can also use the ESPN radio app on another device to listen to the game in English while watching the live stream from Univision.

Download the iPhone, iPad or Android apps to get started.

USA vs Belgium Live on UnoTelly

If you sing up for a free UnoTelly account you can trick your iPad, iPhone or Android (and many other devices) into thinking it is in the UK, which means you can access free USA vs Belgium live streams on TVPlayer and other apps that are otherwise restricted to other countries.

The USA vs Germany live stream is how many fans will watch the most important World Cup 2014 match yet, for the United States Mens National Soccer Team.

The USA vs Germany World Cup game takes place during the day, which means most U.S. Fans are stuck at work. Although the US head coach posted an official excuse form to give to your boss, an informal survey suggests many fans will need to watch the USA vs Germany game at work.

Flooding in Recife can’t stop Jermaine Jones and the US team from taking the pitch to play Germany for a chance to advance to the next round.

If you don’t have cable at work, or your boss won’t let you sit in the break room for two hours to watch the USA vs Germany World Cup match you can use a computer, iPad, Android tablet or pretty much any device with a screen to find at least one USA vs Germany  live stream, even if you don’t have a cable subscription.

USA vs Germany Start Time & Flooding in Recife

The USA vs Germany match starts at 12PM Eastern and 9AM Pacific. Unless you can pull off an extended lunch, you may need to watch it at work.

There was concern that the USA vs Germany game would be delayed due to flooding in Recife, but FIFA confirmed the game will go on, even though there are reports that travel to the stadium is treacherous.

The pitch is wet, which will change how the USA and Germany play the game and could make for an interesting match.

iWatch rumors keep heating up, and we’ve been hearing about all sorts of alleged features coming to the new smartwatch, but a couple of new reports could give us the cherry on top as far as when and what we can expect from the iWatch.

The iWatch is rumored to arrive at some point this fall, right around when new iPads will most likely be launched as well. According to Reuters, Apple will launch the iWatch in October and will hit the production line starting sometime this month and hit high gear next month, which could mean that we might see production units get leaked sooner or later, but that’s something we’ll have to cross our fingers for. This October timeline goes right along with past reports that the iWatch will get released in October.

Furthermore, the same report claims that the iWatch will have a 2.5-inch screen, although that was all that was said about the matter. A 2.5-inch display is fairly large; by comparison, the Samsung Gear 2 watch has a 1.6-inch display and the Pebble smartwatch has a 1.25-inch screen. With such a large screen, it’s hard to imagine how such a watch will look on small wrists, but it’s said that there will be multiple models of the iWatch.

The Wall Street Journal says that there will be multiple designs of the iWatch, although details are pretty slim as far as this is concerned. It’s possible we could see different models for men and women, with a slightly smaller screen for those with smaller wrists, but we’ll have to wait and see.

These reports from Reuters and WSJ also claim that the iWatch will come packed with a healthy amount of features, including wireless charging and over 10 sensors, with some of those sensors being dedicated to tracking various health and fitness elements. Apple has recently gotten more and more into the health-tracking phase and even announced HealthKit for iOS 8, which is a centralized app that gathers all kinds of health and fitness information of the user.

As for other features of the iWatch that have been rumored in the recent past, there are claims that it will sport a curved OLED display and run a modified version of iOS 8. A display like this wouldn’t be far-fetched, but an earlier rumor suggests that the iWatch will have a circular display. We highly doubt that the iWatch will sport both a circular and curved display, so we’re taking both reports with a grain of salt, but either one sounds rather logical at this point, although a 2.5-inch rounded display would be a bit too large, so we’ll really just have to wait and see.

It was said in the past that the iWatch would come with a rounded display, similar to that of the Moto 360, which we’ve already seen teased on video. This would most likely mean that Apple plans on bringing a simple and elegant design to the iWatch, rather than try to reinvent the timeless design of such a device, which is good news for those who like elegant design mixed with smart technology.

Furthermore, the iWatch is said to sport a slimmer case than the Moto 360, which could possibly make the iWatch lighter and more versatile, especially if it came with an OLED display. In an OLED display, each pixel is made up of an organic material (hence the name: Organic Light-Emitting Diode) that emits light when an electrical current is passed through it. Because of this, OLED displays do not require a backlight, allowing them to be thinner and lighter than normal LCD displays. This makes them possible to bend and curve.

According to the Apple employees who spoke with the New York Times, the iWatch is expected to be launched at some point during the fourth quarter this year, which could be anytime from October to December, but we’ll most likely see it in October. This is when Apple announces a lot of new products.

The October timeline sounds pretty logical to us, but it is still something that’s very much up in the air. However, it’s said that Apple’s smartwatch will go into production somewhere around July or August, which could very well indicate a fall launch for the device, since the iPhone 6 is expected to be put into production around that same time frame. This also goes along with past rumors that mention a late 2014 release.
