65 Exciting Things You Can Do With the Apple Watch is a post by Xavier Lanier from Gotta Be Mobile.

Right out of the box, an Apple Watch can help keep you healthy, deliver notifications, make calls, send texts, run simple apps, and even save your life. But the real magic happens when you install apps and personalize your Apple Watch to help you achieve exactly what you hope to do in any given day.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly what the Apple Watch can do in a variety of settings. Some of them may sound obvious to long-time Apple Watch users, but we promise there are some cool things listed below that you’ve never tried since the Apple Watch and WatchOS are constantly evolving.

Almost all recent Apple Watch models can do everything listed below, but some of the features are exclusive to more recent Apple Watch models. If you are using an Apple Watch that’s a few years old and want to be able to do everything listed in this guide, you may need to upgrade to the newest Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch 8, or Apple Watch Ultra.

The Apple Watch is more than a miniaturized iPhone on your wrist. When you understand what you can do with the Apple Watch it becomes an amazing tool to help you get through your day, be more productive, lose weight, and even save money.

Your Apple Watch can do more than anyone likely needs. But just about everyone should get to know the basic Apple Watch features that are at its core. However, a lot of people don’t make use of the Apple Watch’s best features. This Apple Watch series aren’t the only watches that connect to the iPhone, but they are the best for most people.

What Can the Apple Watch Do with watchOS 9?

With watchOS 9, there are more workout views, a new compass layout, improved medications reminders, better sleep tracking, and more dynamic watch faces. These, combined with many other watchOS 9 features, means you can do more with your Apple Watch than ever, and rely less on your iPhone. That’s important for those that aren’t allowed to or aren’t able to pull out their iPhones whenever they choose. There are more details within each of the sections below.

Communicating Quickly

1.) Answer Calls on the Apple Watch:

You can answer phone calls on your Apple Watch, using it as a small Bluetooth speakerphone. There’s no need to pull out your iPhone for shorter calls thanks to the Apple Watch’s built-in microphone and speaker. Just keep in mind that those nearby may be able to hear your caller and the speakerphone on the Apple Watch isn’t nearly as loud as the iPhone’s.

You can also use your Apple Watch to quickly let callers know that you can’t talk at the moment by tapping one of your pre-set replies, such as “Sorry, I can’t talk right now.”

2.) Place Calls from Your Apple Watch

You can place calls from your Apple Watch in a flash. All you have to do is hold the Apple Watch’s crown down to activate Siri and ask your watch to call a contact. If you are dialing a number that isn’t in your contact list, then you can also tap it into your Apple Watch using an on-screen keypad.

If you have an Apple Watch GPS + Cellular, you can make or receive calls on your Apple Watch, even when your  iPhone isn’t nearby. This requires adding the watch to your plan for about $10 per month with your wireless carrier. The Apple Watch Ultra comes with the cellular feature baked in. If you want to make calls from other models, you need to plan ahead and make sure you buy a cellular model as there’s no way to upgrade down the road.

3.) Call 911 in Two Steps

In an emergency, the Apple Watch makes it fast and easy to call for help. All you need to do is hold down the side button for a few seconds until three options pop up. Sliding the SOS icon to the right will activate an emergency call. Regardless of where in the world you are, the Apple Watch will call the appropriate phone number for emergency services. While you may be used to dialing 911, the Apple Watch is smart enough to dial the proper number and even key in any confirmation number local authorities require.

4.) View and Reply to Texts and iMessages on Your Wrist

Text messages and iMessages instantly appear on your wrist so you don’t have to take your phone out of your pocket. You can also reply quickly with canned messages, emojis, Siri or by scribbling letter by letter what you want to say. The canned messages often pick up on the context of a text so that you can tap on an option that someone gives you.

You can also see recent conversations in the Messages app on the Apple Watch. This works with both iMessages and text messages.

5). Send Facebook Messages

Facebook Messenger is a popular app for staying in touch with family, friends and groups. You can receive Facebook Messages on your Apple Watch and even reply with with text, emoji, a thumbs up, your location or a custom message using the microphone to dictate. If you rely on Facebook Messages to stay in touch, this is an awesome feature. Facebook Messenger supports the scribble reply feature so you can reply even when you can’t talk.

6) Use the Apple Watch as a Translator

Apple Watch iTranslate App Spanish English

You can use your Apple Watch as a translator so that you can talk with people you don’t share a common language with. There is even an offline mode to use when you are traveling and don’t have a cellular connection.

iTranslate is a free app that offers in-app purchases to unlock some additional features. The app allows you to translate between more than 100 languages. The app translates quickly and allows the person you’re communicating with to read what you said in their native language. There’s also an option to have the Apple Watch speak the translations out loud.

7. Apple Watches Can be Walkie Talkies

You can use your Apple Watch as a walkie talkie to communicate with friends and families when you are out and about. The Walkie Talkie app on the Apple Watch allows you to send audio messages that automatically play when the recipients are marked as available.  This allows you to quickly chat back and forth with friends during the day or connect with them when you are at an event like a concert easily. Some people use this feature like an intercom at home.

8. Check Your Email

Apple Watch Mail app Can Check Delete email

Is your email app your second home? If so, the Apple Watch will either be the best thing to happen or a gateway to checking your email even more often. You can get Mail notifications on your wrist, read flag, delete and easily open on the iPhone for a longer reply. This works inside the Mail app for iPhone.

There isn’t a Gmail app for Apple Watch, but you can get Gmail notifications. You won’t necessarily get a notification for each and every email that comes in, but it will mirror what you see on your iPhone.

9. Send Memojis on Apple Watch

Apple Watch Memoji

You can send Memojis from your Apple Watch, as well as standard emoji. You can’t animate the Memoji or make a specific face like you can on the iPhone, but you can send the Memoji that are standard on the iPhone from your watch.

10. Send Apple Watch Drawings to Friends

You can sketch out a small drawing with your finger on your Apple Watch and send it to a friend’s Apple Watch. The only limits are your imagination, artistic skill, and of course the screen size. The drawing will come across as an animated sketch and your friend can respond with another drawing. This drawings will also go directly to iPhones.

11. Share Your Heartbeat

The Apple Watch can track your heart rate for fitness activities, but that’s not all the sensors can do. You can share your heartbeat with a loved one as a message.  When you do this a small animation shows on-screen to show your heartbeat directly to another Apple watch. Apple calls this, “a simple intimate way to tell someone how you feel.”

This isn’t something that most Apple Watch users will use often, but it’s a cool way to send a message to someone you love to let them know you are thinking about them.

Apple Watch Can Help Keep You Healthy and Safe

1. Monitor Safe Hearing Levels

The Apple Watch comes with a noise app that tracks how loud your environment is. This allows you to know if you are in a setting where audio is at a dangerous level so you can get hearing protection or move away from the loud sources of noise. You can expect to get alerts in loud environments like constructions sites, rock concerts, and fireworks shows.  You will also see alerts for things you might not think will damage your hearing, such as sustained noise at volumes that aren’t as jarring.

2. Check and Track Blood Oxygen Levels

The Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, and Ultra include a sensor that tracks your blood oxygen levels. This is especially useful for those who need to monitor their blood oxygen levels due to illnesses such as Asthma, Influenza, and COVID-19.

The more recent Apple Watches will take blood oxygen level readings throughout the day, which means you can instantly see your most recent reading on your Apple Watch’s Blood Oxygen app. If you want a current blood oxygen level reading it 15 seconds to take a new one.  You can see a running history of your blood oxygen levels in your iPhone’s Health app.

3. Monitor Your Heart Rate

Apple Watch heart rate Can track Automatically

The Apple Watch heart rate monitor is credited with saving the life of a teen and of a 62 year old.

The Apple Watch uses sensors on the back of the Apple Watch to check your heart rate automatically throughout the day. Your current heart rate, resting heart rate, and walking average are all instantly viewable on your Apple Watch by tapping the Heart Rate app. Your heart rate data is stored in the Apple Health app on your iPhone so you can look at trends and see more details.

When you are exercising, you can see the heart rate at all times on your Apple Watch if you start a workout.

4. Take an Electrocardiogram (ECG)

ECG Apple Watch Can Take Just 30 SecondsThe Apple Watch Series 4 and newer (except SE models) can take Electrocardiograms (ECG) to detect your heart health. An ECG used to be something that required a visit to a medical provider, but you can now check your heart’s rhythm in just 30 seconds with your Apple Watch. All you need to do is launch the ECG app and hold your finger to the Digital Crown. When the scan is done it will show you whether your heart shows signs of arterial fibrulation (afib).

5. Track Your Fitness

The Apple Watch uses various sensors to monitor your movement and track your progress towards healthy goals that the Apple Watch or an Apple Watch app will help you set.

You can see this progress across three categories; movement, exercise and time spent standing. Movement measures calories burned, exercise is when you hit 30 minutes of exercise in a day, and the stand section aims to make you less sedentary. The watch will alert you to stand up if you sit for too long and nudge you towards movement and exercise goals.

You can adjust your move goal by pressing hard on the screen when in the Activity App. You can also see the fitness information on your iPhone in the Health app.

6. Track Your Runs

The Apple Watch can use its built-in GPS to track where you runs, even if you don’t bring your iPhone with you. You can view your detailed runs on a map on your iPhone after your run so you can decide if you want to repeat the route in the future or not.

7. Track Your Cycle

You can easily track your cycle and get alerts on your Apple Watch. The app uses information you enter on your last period  to help predict the start of your next period.

You can see this information on your Apple Watch and log flow as well as symptoms of your period.

8. Track Your Sleep

All recent Apple Watch models include built-in sleep tracking features that make sure you get to bed on time, wake up on time, and help improve your quality of sleep. All you need to do is enter some basic info in the Sleep app and wear your Apple Watch to sleep.  The Apple Watch will track how much time you spend in each stage of sleep and at what time you hit each stage.

Use the Apple Watch to Get Around

1. Use the Apple Watch as a Compass

Apple Watch Compass using to get around

Select Watch Faces and  the standalone Compass app is a standalone app can show you the which way you’re facing, the incline, elevation and your latitude and longitude. This is a cool feature to try at least a few times, especially if you’re directionally challenged. For more complicated navigation, there are countless watch apps that use the Apple Watch Compass to assist you navigate on land, water, or even sky.

2. Use the Apple Watch as a Car Key

You can use your Apple Watch  as a key for most newer BMWs and select Hyundai and KIA models.  That means you can open your cars’ doors and start the ignition by just tapping on your watch’s side button a couple of times.  Almost all BMW models built since July 2020 support the Apple key feature, with Hyundai and Kia compatibility much more limited.

Apple Watch Productivity Features

1. Use Your Apple Watch as a Calculator

The Apple Watch can be used as a calculator through Siri or the calculator app. The built-in app can help you solve basic math problems and settle restaurant bills. The Apple Watch calculator app has a TIP calculator that lets you put in the total due and adjust the percentage of tip you’d like to leave. It also gives you the option to select the number of people splitting the bill to give you a precise number for each person to pay.

2. Record a Voice Memo or Conversation

You can use your Apple Watch to record a Voice Memo  with its built-in microphone. This means your Apple Watch can quickly record your thoughts before you forget them, important meetings and conversations without having to rely on your iPhone. All you need to do is open the app by selecting it from the app screen or by asking Siri to open the Voice Memos app. To start recording, all you need to do is tap the red button. Voice Memos are stored in iCloud and synced to your other Apple devices for playback and sharing.

3. Unlock Your MacBook and Passwords

With Auto Unlock enabled on your MacBook, you can quickly unlock it while wearing your Apple Watch. That means you won’t need to type in your password every time your MacBook goes to sleep. You can also use your Apple Watch to automatically unlock your stored Passwords and password-protected Notes.

Apple Watch Entertainment Features:

Listen to Podcasts on the Apple Watch:

Apple includes the Podcasts app on the Apple Watch. You can sync podcasts to the Apple Watch based on the ones you listen to on your iPhone when the watch is on its charger. If you are mobile you can stream the latest episodes on LTE or on WiFi.  You will to use your AirPods to listen as Podcasts won’t play back on the Apple Watch’s built-in speaker.

Other Things the Apple Watch Can Do

1. Stay Quiet in a Movie Theater

You can tell your Apple Watch not to respond to hand movements while you are at the movies. This keeps your Apple Watch from lighting up when you move your arm. With this mode, the watch noises also stop, so you can enjoy the movie without disturbing others. You will still get notifications and the watch will vibrate so you know if something important is happening, it’s just less likely to annoy people around you.

To enable this, just swipe up from the Apple Watch home screen, and you’ll see a pair of theater masks.  Tap on the masks to turn on Theater mode. When you are done, tap on it again to turn it off.

2. Tell You The Time

There’s more than one way for the Apple Watch to tell you the time. While the most obvious way is to just look at your wrist, there are a few other ways to tell time on the Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch can speak the time to you by tapping the watch face with two fingers. You can also set your Apple Watch to play hourly chimes.   The Apple Watch can also tap out the time on your wrist using its haptic engine.

Settings to change what Apple Watch can do for telling time

Answer Calls on the Apple Watch

Answer Calls on the Apple Watch

You can answer a call on your Apple Watch using it as a small Bluetooth speakerphone. You only want to use this for shorter calls because the audio quality isn't as good as when you are talking on speakerphone on your iPhone.

The Apple Watch only allows you to answer your calls on Speakerphone, so you won't want to use this all the time. It is very handy when you are working on a project or busy with your hands. Definitely be conscious of where you are taking calls. If you wouldn't talk on speakerphone, you shouldn't talk on your Apple Watch.

If you buy the new Apple Watch with LTE, you can even make calls on the Apple Watch without your iPhone nearby. This requires adding the watch to your plan for $10 a month. You cannot answer a FaceTime video call on the Apple Watch.

6 Reasons to Wait for the Apple Watch 6 & 4 Reasons Not To is a post by Josh Smith from Gotta Be Mobile.

What we know about the Apple Watch Series 6 so far.

What we know about the Apple Watch Series 6 so far.

If you’re looking to buy an Apple Watch in 2020, there are great reasons you should wait for the Apple Watch 6 instead of buying what’s on the market today. Here’s why you should wait for the 2020 Apple Watch, and why you should click purchase today.

Read: Reasons to Buy the Apple Watch 6

  • Expect the Apple Watch Series 6 announcement on September 15th.
  • New health features are likely.
  • Wait for display, design, or water resistance upgrades.

We could see two new 2020 Apple Watch models this year with a high end, and a mid-range model. Essentially this means a new Apple Watch 6 to replace the Apple Watch 5 and a new entry-level Apple Watch to replace the Apple Watch 3.

The Apple Watch 5 is almost a year old, but it is still a good option for some users and you can save with Apple Watch Series 5 deals that happen regularly. In Summer 2020, we routinely saw the Apple Watch 5 for $100 off.

If you’re looking for an Apple Watch in 2020, the Apple Watch 5, Apple Watch 4, and even Apple Watch 3 are good options, but you should also consider waiting for the 2020 Apple Watch, aka the Series 6.

The free watchOS 7 update is coming later this year alongside the Apple Watch 6. Apple will deliver the new update to the Apple Watch Series 5, Series 4, and Series 3.

No products found.

It looks like Apple is pushing the envelope for the Apple Watch 6 with more significant upgrades than we got this year, and if an Always On Display and Compass didn’t convince you to upgrade, you might want to hold on for the next model.

Apple Watch 6 Rumors

Apple Watch 6 release date rumors are all over the board this month, and now that Apple is hosting an event on September 15th, we expect that is the day the new models will arrive.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning to release two new Apple Watch models this year. A new high-end model to replace the Apple Watch 5 and an entry-level Apple Watch 3 replacement that competes with the Fitbit.

Another report from Bloomberg outlines the inclusion of a faster processor and a blood oxygen meter. The watch will keep the current 40mm and 44mm sizes. This lines up with leaks in the watchOS 7 code and with reports from analysts.

The 2020 Apple Watch will include faster performance, even more, water-resistance and better wireless speeds for both cellular and WiFi. The report from TF International Securities is authored by Ming-Chi Kou, who has an excellent track record with Apple rumors.

Early iOS 14 leaks mentioned that Apple might be planning to add blood oxygen detection to the Apple Watch 6 this year. 9to5Mac notes that this could be a software upgrade that comes to some recent models, but there is also a chance that it is only available on the new Apple Watch. The same report mentions ECG improvements at heart rates between 100-120 beats per minute. We did not see this mentioned with watchOS 7.

Apple is adding sleep tracking to the Apple Watch with watchOS 7 updates and bringing it to older models. We may see new sensors on Series 6 enhance the sleep tracking. Apple’s been testing sleep tracking for the Apple Watch for some time.

Another report suggests Apple will switch Apple Watch suppliers in 2020. A new company will make the S chips that run the Apple Watch. It’s not clear what this change means for consumers in terms of features just yet, but it is a sign of things to come.

Here’s a closer look at the reasons to wait for the 2020 Apple Watch, and why you shouldn’t wait for the new model.

Wait for a New Apple Watch Features

Wait for a New Apple Watch Features

The Apple Watch 5 is a relatively minor update, and we're expecting Apple will push forward with a bigger upgrade for the Apple Watch 6.

Originally we expected a new design and display tech, but it looks like the Apple Watch Series 6 will be similar in style to the Apple Watch 5.

It looks like we will see increases health tracking features like blood oxygen level tracking, sleep tracking and there are also a lot of watchOS 7 features coming to the Apple Watch this fall.

On September 15th we should learn about all the new Apple Watch 6 features, and that is a big reason to wait.

After several years of the same design, Apple upgrades the new Apple Watch with a massive screen upgrade, better battery life when you are working out with GPS and epic new heart health features that you’ll want to use. There’s even a potentially life saving feature that may make you run out and buy any elderly person in your life a new Apple Watch 4.

8 Cool Things the Apple Watch 4 Can Do (That the Series 3 Can’t)

Apple Watch 4 buyers will want to make use of all the cool Apple Watch 4 features we list below so that you can get the most out of your device. These features are all new to the Apple Watch 4. You can check out this massive list of things the Apple Watch can do to learn about everything you can do with the device on watchOS 5.

  4. Give Haptic Feedback From Digital Crown
  5. Show Off Screen With Epic New Watch Faces
  6. Last Longer When Tracking Outdoor Workouts
  7. Use Up to Eight Complications at Once
  8. Run Apps and Respond Faster Than the Apple Watch 3

The Apple Watch 4 starts at $399 for the smaller size and $499 for the smaller size with LTE connectivity. Apple still sells the Apple Watch 3, which is more affordable, but can’t do all the things that the newest model can. The features are the same for the aluminum Apple Watch and the stainless steel Apple Watch and for both sizes. The only difference between the GPS and GPS + LTE models is that you can use the LTE models without your iPhone for most features. You still need an iPhone to share the phone number and to manage other features.

Here are the best new things the Apple Watch Series 4 can do. Use this to get more out of your watch, decide which Apple Watch to buy and decide if you should upgrade to the Apple Watch 4. The Apple Watch includes all of the great upgrades from the Apple Watch 3, in addition to these new features.

Also be sure to check out 50 cool things the Apple Watch can do, You should also look into our list of the best Apple Watch bands and best Apple Watch Accessories.

Take an ECG Anytime

Take an ECG Anytime

The Apple Watch 4 packs a new heart rate sensor and it also includes the ability to take an Electrocardiogram right on your wrist at any time.

Typically you need to go to a doctor to get an ECG, and it might not capture the heart issues that happen throughout the day.

With the Apple Watch 4, you can take an ECG by placing your finger on the digital crown and the Apple Watch does the rest. This is an FDA Approved mobile ECG, and it is potentially life saving.

This joins a host of other Apple Watch heart features that are available on other models including low heart rate alert, afib alert and more heart health record keeping and tracking. You can easily share the health information to your doctor from the Health app on your iPhone.

Alongside the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung announced an all-new Galaxy Watch with a lot to offer. This new smartwatch comes in two sizes, an LTE option, and promises to last nearly a week on a single charge. Here’s what you need to know about Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch.

While the Galaxy Watch doesn’t run Google’s Wear OS, like we heard from rumors, it’s still an excellent smartwatch in a market dominated by the Apple Watch. If you’re looking for a watch that isn’t made by Apple, this is worth considering.

Read: 10 Things You Didn’t Know Your Smartwatch Could Do

If you’ve been waiting for a new smartwatch to pair with your Android phone, like a Galaxy S9 or the new Galaxy Note 9, this is it. Here’s how long the battery lasts, the release date, and how much you’ll pay for the Samsung Galaxy Watch.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Release Date

First things first, the Galaxy Watch will be available for pre-order starting August 10th with the release date set for August 24th. Basically, you can walk into carrier stores, retailers, or head to Samsung.com on August 24th and buy a Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy Watch at the same time. They even have a new dual wireless charging stand to recharge both devices at the same time.

We don’t see a reason to pre-order the Galaxy Watch, so go buy one on August 24th at a store near you.

Galaxy Watch Comes in Two Sizes

Samsung’s new smartwatch comes in two different sizes, that way it’s perfect for both men and women. Or, for those that don’t like a massive watch on their wrist. The smaller device is 42mm (1.2-inch screen) and has a 20mm changeable band.

However, the one most people will want is the bigger 46mm Galaxy Watch. That’s because it has an even bigger 1.3-inch OLED display, and a far bigger battery that Samsung claims can last for days on end. The bigger Galaxy Watch also has a wider 22mm band that matches most 3rd party accessories sold for other watches around the globe. Not to mention the wide array of replacement bands from Samsung themselves.

Galaxy Watch Specs

While specs inside a watch aren’t as important as your smartphone, it does make a big difference. Especially when it comes to battery life, or for features like an always-on display. What’s the point of a smartwatch if the screen is always off to preserve battery life? Samsung is using the latest and greatest wearable technology to ensure a great experience and top-tier specs.

Galaxy Watch Specs

  • 1.2 or 1.3-inch 360 x 360 Full-Color Always-On Display (round)
  • Samsung Exynos 9110 Dual core 1.15GHz
  • 1.5GB RAM and 4GB memory (storage) (Bluetooth only model is 768MB RAM)
  • Samsung Tizen Wearable OS 4.0
  • 3G, 4G LTE, WiFi, BlueTooth, GPS, more
  • Accelerometer, Gyro, Barometer, HRM, Ambient Light
  • IP68 / MIL-STD-810G
  • Wireless Charging, 472mAh or 270 mAh for all-day battery life
  • 46mm comes in silver, 42mm available in Midnight Black or Rose Gold

As you can see,  Samsung’s new watch packs quite a bunch. That said, it doesn’t run the latest wearable processors from Qualcomm, and the smaller model doesn’t have a very big battery considering the screen is only .1 smaller.

You still get a water-resistant device that meets military-grade ratings for toughness. And yes, they have Corning Gorilla Glass covering the display. We would love to see a bigger battery, Google’s Wear OS, and the same 1.5GB of RAM on both models, but they’re still shaping up as great watches for potential buyers.

Galaxy Watch Battery Life

The most important aspect of a smartwatch for me is battery life. I don’t want to take off and recharge it daily like I do my smartphone. And what good is a watch that dies halfway through the day? Luckily for you, Samsung claims the Galaxy Watch will finally deliver the battery life everyone wants.

According to Samsung reps, when you combine the bigger battery with its new Wearable OS silicon processor, average users could get 5-7 days on a single charge. That’s impressive. The bigger 46mm watch has a 472 mAh battery. As a comparison, the Gear S3 last year had a 380 mAh battery, so the 46mm watch coming in nearly 100 mAh bigger is a pretty big deal.

Furthermore, Samsung really hounded on the battery life point. Stating that even the most demanding user can expect 3-days on a single charge. If true, that makes this potentially one of the best watches around. Now if only it wasn’t so thick.

Galaxy Watch Price

As we said above, the Galaxy Watch comes in two different sizes. The 42mm watch is $329.99 which is pretty expensive, and available on August 24th.

Samsung’s bigger 46mm watch is only $20 more and will cost $349. That extra $20 gets you substantially better battery life, a slightly bigger screen, and a different color. You’ll be able to buy the Bluetooth-only model from Amazon, Best Buy, and Samsung’s store.

Additionally, an LTE variant will arrive later this year from carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and more. We’re assuming that one will cost even more, get bundled with the Galaxy Note 9, or come with heavy discounts when you add a line. Get yours on August 24th.

Samsung is reportedly working on a brand new Galaxy Watch for 2018 (formerly known as the Gear S4) and it could arrive alongside the Galaxy Note 9 later this year. With a release on the way, some of you should start thinking about waiting for the Galaxy Watch to arrive.

As we start pushing into the summer, we’re starting to hear more about Samsung’s plans for the rest of the year. We know the company is working on a Galaxy Note 9. We know it’s working on Android 8.1 Oreo and Bixby 2.0. And we now know it’s working on a new smartwatch.

Samsung Gear S4 rumors first emerged earlier this year. While vague, we learned the company’s next smartwatch was being developed under the codename Galileo as model number SM-R800. Since then, Gear S4 rumors have started to pickup and the big picture is slowly coming together.

Last year, Samsung chose not to release a true successor for the Tizen-powered Gear S3 smartwatch is launched in late 2016. Instead, the company announced the Gear Sport.

This year, it looks like Samsung will release a true Apple Watch competitor and Galaxy S3 successor and there are already some great reasons to think about waiting for the device to arrive.

Gear S4 rumors are pointing to a new brand name. Instead of the Gear S4, Samsung will reportedly call its next watch the Galaxy Watch.

In addition to a new name, the device will supposedly run a new operating system, come in a new color, feature a bigger battery and a thinner design, and come with wireless charging.

Samsung’s also reportedly cooking up a wireless charger for the Galaxy Watch. The accessory just cleared the Korean Radio Research Agency.

We don’t know what the charger looks like but there’s a very good chance it looks similar to the wireless charger Samsung released for the Gear S3. The accessory will likely be a cradle that lets users charge the smartwatch simply by setting the device down on the charger.

The Galaxy Watch is also starting to clear hurdles on its way to shelves. The device recently got its certification via the ECC (Eurasian Economic Commission), a sign that Samsung’s announcement is getting closer.

There are also a few reasons why you might want to skip the Galaxy Watch and go with something else. In this guide we’ll take you through the best reasons to wait for the Galaxy Watch and a few reasons why you might want to start looking elsewhere.

Wait for the Best Software Support

Wait for the Best Software Support

If you plan on keeping your next smartwatch for awhile, you might want to think about waiting for Samsung's Galaxy Watch.

While you might be tempted to go with a cheaper version of the Gear smartwatch, the Gear S3 series will lose software support much faster than the Galaxy Watch.

Samsung continues to update the Gear S3 series with new software updates, but that support will end before it stops for the Galaxy Watch.

The Galaxy Watch's hardware upgrades will ensure that the device gets upgraded with the latest software features for several years to come.

We don't know much about the software that'll power the Galaxy Watch, but it looks like it'll be powered by Tizen 4.0 and come with "new UX interaction and blood pressure measurement."

Samsung's poised to debut Bixby 2.0 (the next version of its virtual assistant) later this year and we could see it arrive alongside the Galaxy Watch.

A report from SamMobile claims Samsung is indeed planning Bixby for the Galaxy Watch which means it will replace S Voice.

The device isn't expected to include an additional button which you'll be able to bring up Bixby using the home button or the "Hi Bixby" voice command.

Just like the past few years, Google will likely release a new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL this fall. They typically hold a launch event in October. However, new reports suggest that isn’t all Google has planned for 2018.

In fact, Google will reportedly use its hardware event to unveil a 2nd Gen Pixel Bud headset, along with an all-new Wear OS Smartwatch. To be specific, a “Pixel Watch” to take on the Apple Watch.

Read: Google Pixel 3: 5 Features We Want Next

Google’s smartphones continue to impress, but its Pixel Buds fell short in 2017. Not to mention Android Wear smartwatches aren’t all that popular either. That said, if Google can unleash a few impressive products that plays nice with its Pixel phones, we could see the comeback of Wear OS. Here’s what we know, and what we’re hearing.

According to the popular and highly accurate leaker Evan Blass, Google has two surprises coming later this year. Besides the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, we’ll get new Pixel Buds and a Pixel-branded watch. We don’t have any other information to go on, but we’re expecting to learn more soon.

Google recently rebranded Android Wear into “Wear OS” and hopefully a Pixel Watch made by Google will help boost sales and get smartwatches popular again. And while they partnered with LG in 2017 and released a few nice watches, a Pixel Watch could be exactly what the market wants and needs. Especially if this potential Pixel Watch has hybrid features that combine a regular timepiece with modern software and technology. We’re thinking a regular mechanical watch, with a Wear OS display on the bottom half. Giving users the best of both worlds.

However, we’re more excited about the idea of a 2nd-Gen Pixel Bud headset. Google’s headphones overpromised and underdelivered last year, even if they were excellent headphones. In 2018, we’re hoping for a truly wireless design that can compete with AirPods or Samsung’s Gear IconX. Not to mention all the other 100% wireless headphones on the market.

This makes sense given recent market trends, and you can bet the Google Assistant will be built-in too. We’re still a long ways away from October, but it’ll be here before you know it. Expect more leaks, reports, and rumors, then some sort of announcement from Google in September. The last few events took place the first week of October, so we’re betting the same thing will happen this year. Stay tuned for more details.

10 Things You Didn’t Know Your Smartwatch Could Do

Speedometer

Speedometer

Most Android Wear smartwatches have a GPS sensor built-in, and if not, your smartphone does. An app called Speed Wear turns any smartwatch into an all-out speedometer.

Speed Wear will show users their current speed, average speed, and top speed, and save it all to the app. This is ideal for running, biking, hiking, or just neat to use and test while driving in a car during a road trip.

The app features different units including: KM/H, MPH and Knots (can be set from the last screen; by swiping all the way to the right) and even has an ambient mode with large clear text to improve readability. Some devices may not be 100% accurate due to the GPS chip inside the watch or phone.

How Weight Loss Tech Helped Me Lose 70 Pounds is a post by Kevin Purcell from Gotta Be Mobile.

I am grossly obese, but a few useful weight loss tech gadgets and apps helped me drop 70 pounds since the first of this year. I still have a long way to go before hopefully losing 200 pounds, but these accessories and tools give me the hope that I can reach my goal. Here’s how I did it.

Before I go any further let me offer some full disclosure. I started this journey at a whopping 428 pounds. That’s morbidly obese and my doctor pushed me to do something about it for years. I never could until a new weight loss drug prescribed by my doctor took away the hunger cravings.

how-I-lost-70-lbs-with-weight-loss-tech

In spite of my weakness, I did lose weight and the things below continue to help me drop pounds while tracking my health. I hope this helps you, whether you are in a serious condition like me or just want to shed a dozen pounds before vacation at the beach.

Weight Loss Tech: Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S8+

My smartphone serves as the hub for most of these weight loss tech items. Many of them connect via bluetooth or other ways to my phone.

I started out using an Apple iPhone 7 Plus but then bought a Samsung Galaxy S8+ when it came out earlier this year. Both devices offer some nice health tools, like tracking steps and apps for losing weight or staying healthy. Of the two, I prefer the Samsung Galaxy S8+, which is why I’m using it now as my daily driver (even though I still own the iPhone 7 Plus).

Apple Health will connect to other apps and track your data. It’s nice to see it all in one place. The app also suggests possible apps you might want to look at in the App Store. It was Apple Health that led me to my calorie counting app below. Apple Health does far more than I use it to do, but it’s a helpful tool if you’re an iPhone user.

samsung-health-and-apple-health

Apple Health on the left and Samsung Health on the right.

After switching to the Samsung Galaxy S8+ about a month into my weight loss regiment, Samsung Health became my preferred phone app for tracking my health. Like Apple Health, it connects to other apps, services and devices to track everything from one location. The app also includes a Discover tab that shows news and suggestions to help you with our health matters. I don’t look at it much, but on occasion will open it up and check out the posts offered.

Both Health apps let you set goals for your exercise, weight loss and other health related categories. If you’re trying to get or stay healthy, check them out.

Withings Smart Scale

When I started out on my weight loss journey, I couldn’t find a scale that would register my weight. For the first 6 weeks I had to rely only on the doctor’s office scale. Then I hit the sub 400 mark and my Withings Smart Scale finally would register my weight.

withings body smart scale

Withings no longer sells the model I own, but the newest scales do what mine does. I pair it with my phone via Bluetooth and then use the Withings app to set up my profile. This includes things like your birthday, height and then your weight. The app adds your Wi-Fi network to the scale so it will send the information over your wireless network and Internet connection to the company’s servers.  This way you can sync with your app regardless of what phone you use.

The scale uses your weight and the height you enter to track your BMI (body mass index).

The Withings Body smart scale will track your weight, fat mass, muscle mass and water. The app shows a graph for many of these figures like the weight loss graph shown above.

They also sell one called the Withings Body Cardio. It functions like the cheaper Body smart scale, but adds heart health tracking. It tracks something called Pulse Wave Velocity, which tracks the speed at which heart beat waves move blood through your veins. The scale can detect this by measuring your heart beat through the feet as they touch the scale. It costs $179.95.

Apple Watch and Samsung Gear S3 Smart Watches

As I said above, I started out using an iPhone and so I also had the Apple Watch, first generation. When I switched to the Samsung Galaxy S8+,  I bought the Samsung Gear S3 to replace the Apple Watch.

apple watch heath tracking

Both watches help user by more accurately tracking fitness data. They each track steps, calories burned, heart rate and give the users a quick way to see health data and enter information in apps that support the watches.

In addition to tracking your activity, they also encourage activity. The Apple Watch nags you to get moving every hour on the 50th minute. The Samsung Gear S3 does a slightly better job by sensing when you last got moving and then doesn’t bother you until you hit an hour of inactivity. Neither watch does a good job of recognizing that you are driving to pause the inactivity notifications.

When you wear a smartwatch, you send data to apps on the phone like Apple Health or Samsung Health. Other apps will also draw data from the watch to help track your health.

My Fitness Pal App

I’ve already mentioned the Apple Health app and Samsung Health App. The single biggest aid in losing wight comes from Under Armor. Their My Fitness Pal app for both iOS and Android tracks  my calorie intake, water intake and other fitness and health categories.

my-fitness-pal

Each day I log what I eat. The app connects to their database of food and automatically enters calories and other nutritional info like sodium levels, fat content and more. I get a reminder after each meal time to enter my food. I can also set the app to remind me to drink more water, which becomes necessary with the medicine I’m taking for weight loss. Without plenty of water, this medicine has a nasty side effect.

The calorie and nutritional information in the database offers mostly accurate information.  Sometimes, while eating at a restaurant, I’ll search for the menu item and the calorie amount on the menu doesn’t match the database. In that case you can enter strictly calorie figures or you can send them a corrected figure. About 90 percent of the time the figures prove accurate.

The app comes free, but a premium subscription version adds a few features for $10/month or $50/year. You can set calorie goals per meal instead of just per day. Premium will also track carbs and protein nutritional data. The free version lets you add calorie amounts without entering the exact food item, but not other nutritional info. The premium version does. It also takes out the ads and gives users “priority customer support.”

If you’re serous about tracking nutrition, then get the subscription. It’s worth it.

Google Fit and Android Wear

Over the last month I reviewed the Huawei Watch 2. It uses Google Fit data and the company adds a special Huawei Health app. Google Fit works much like Samsung Health and Apple Health. The Huawei Watch 2 also did a great job of tracking things like steps, calorie burning and heart rate.

I prefer my Samsung Gear S3 for other reasons unrelated to fitness tracking. But if you don’t own a Galaxy phone, then the Huawei Watch 2 will serve well as your fitness tracker.

Standing Desk

I don’t use standing desk due to back issue thanks to carrying around over 200 pounds too many for years. However, some recommend them, like our own Josh Smith who reviewed one awhile back. Here’s his video review.

A standing desk helps you keep active while doing something that’s normally sedentary, like typing. The Ergotron Workfit D reviewed in Josh’s video above adjusts up and down so he can stand or sit. It costs about $700 on Amazon.

The Huawei Watch 2 came out and quickly saw an update to Android Wear 2.  Does this new version of Android Wear bring with it enough goodness to make it a compelling option for buyers comparing it to the competition?

huawei watch 2

No single smartwatch has the momentum and success of popular consumer electronic devices like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phones. However, Huawei has gained more mind share in the Android market with their low-cost smartphones and with the first Huawei Watch. We called it the best Android Wear watch available at the time. The Huawei Watch 2 might win the same acclaim, but is that enough to make it a watch worth $300? And should iPhone users consider it, since it works with iOS?

Huawei Watch 2: Design

huawei watch 2 side with buttons

Huawei makes two different designs. We tested the Huawei Watch 2 Sport, which has ceramic housing and TPU band. The Huawei Watch 2 Classic looks more like an elegant watch with a lighter color and better quality band.

The version we tested has a confetti design on the housing and band that surprised me when I first opened the box. I thought it came with dirt and dust all over the watch and band. When I couldn’t wipe it off, I went online and learned that they designed it that way. It looks terrible to me, but some may like it.

huawei watch 2 always on display

Huawei Watch 2 has an attractive round 45mm display with a 390 x 390 pixel color screen. Around the bezel it has numbers for minutes and seconds in increments of 5. The ugly decoration on our test unit doesn’t take away from the otherwise nice look.

On the right side, two buttons sit ready to interact with the software. Our model came with bright yellow buttons matching the bright yellow band holder near the buckle. A single tap of the top button brings up a list of apps installed on the watch. Scroll through them by swiping on the screen and then tap on an app icon to launch it. Press and hold the top button to bring up the Google Assistant.

Tap the bottom button to start a workout using one of the options from the list that pops up. These include the following workout options:

  • Run
  • Fat burning
  • Cardio
  • Walk
  • Outdoor Cycle
  • Treadmill
  • Indoor Cycle
  • Other
  • Training plan

Press and hold the bottom button to start your default workout automatically without choosing from a list.

The watch and band feel light and comfortable, especially while exercising. They look large compared to the Apple Watch or other traditional watches. It’s smaller than my Samsung Gear S3.

In addition to the ugly confetti on black design, they offer a bright orange model with stainless steel buttons, a black housing with stainless steel and one with black buttons. The Classic (the ceter watch in the image above) has a lighter gray design with matching buttons and a leather band.

The watch comes with IP68 water and dust resistance rating. That means that it’s not going to get dust inside while in a dusty environment. The second number, 8 in this case, means it will stay sealed in water below 1 meter, according to the IP standards specs. You can take it swimming and it shouldn’t mess up the watch.

One version of the Huawei Watch 2 comes with a built-in 4G radio. This means you can make and receive calls from the watch and even leave the phone behind while going for a bike ride or run. Our test model didn’t include this feature.

huawei watch 2 charging

The bottom of the watch has a sensor that picks up your heart rate. It seems pretty accurate. There’s also the connector that lets you charge the watch without plugging in a cable. Just snap the charger onto the back and it holds in place perfectly. I wish it had a nice dock like the one that comes with the Samsung Gear S3.

Huawei Watch 2: Software, Apps and Compatibility

Shortly after opening the Huawei Watch 2, the software updated to Android Wear 2. That improved the experience in some important ways.

The new version of Android Wear brings improvements to Google Fit interaction on Android watches. It also adds Android Pay. In addition, we enjoy native apps on the watch.

media controls on huawei watch 2

The interaction between Android on the phone and on the watch makes Android Wear an attractive option. Take the media control feature where the watch shows what’s playing on the phone and lets the wearer control the music or podcast playing. Tapping will pause the music or podcast.

Android Wear comes with a lot of apps and watchfaces to enjoy. Open the Android Wear app to find links to these in the Google Play Store.

Many of the apps you already have installed on your phone will work on the Huawei Watch 2. The watch offers to install these after you configure the watch with the Android Wear app.

Google Assistant gives Android Wear watches their most powerful feature. Users can use voice controls to add appointments, start phone calls, set reminders or alarms, play music, or even find the phone. The “OK GOOGLE” command will wake it up. It worked well and usually recognized voice commands without difficulty. Google Assistant beats Apple’s Siri and the “Hi Galaxy” voice control feature on Samsung’s Gear S3.

Swipe down from the top of the screen for quick access to some of the watch’s important features. The screen includes controls for …

  • Airplane mode
  • Muting or unmuting sound
  • Brightness
  • Do not disturb mode
  • Settings
  • Battery life shows the battery life, but does nothing when you tap it.
  • Date shows date but also does nothing when tapped.

Swipe up to view past notifications. Swipe notifications to the right to dismiss them or tap them to interact with the app that sent the notification if it supports on-watch features.

Huawei makes two apps for the watch, Huawei Wear and Huawei Health. Huawei Wear lets users update the watch firmware, connect to a watch and shows messages about the watch or its software from the company. It also connects to the Huawei Health app, which shows health and workout information gathered from the watch. Users can customize their health plan and set goals for things like workouts and weight loss.

Huawei Wear and Health Apps

Huawei Wear and Health Apps

Both of these apps are barebones and don’t add much that Android Wear and Google Fit don’t already offer. In fact, I used the watch for about a week before even installing them and didn’t miss them.

Huawei Watch 2 and the Competition

I connected the Huawei Watch to my Samsung Galaxy S8+ and it worked well with the phone. However, I also have a Samsung Gear S3 watch and prefer it over the Huawei. It feels more sturdy and the software interacts better with the watch apps made by Samsung. For example, the Samsung Gear app tells you more about the watch than the Huawei Wear app or Android Wear app. It lets you install apps and watch faces. Also the Samsung Health app reports more information from the watch than Huawei’s Health app.

Samsung Pay lets me make payments on any card swiping terminal, even those that don’t otherwise support NFC payments from Android Pay or Apple Pay. Samsung Pay on the watch and the phone tricks the card swiping machine into thinking that you’ve swiped a card. Android Pay and Samsung Pay don’t play well together and I prefer Samsung Pay.

I also connected the watch to my iPhone. When you use an iPhone with the watch, you limit what you can do. You can only install a limited number of apps directly on the watch. You lose Android Pay and only get notifications from the phone, but most of them don’t let you interact with the apps on your watch or even open the apps on the phone. The phone answering feature doesn’t work at all.

Huawei Watch 2: Bottom Line

Compared to where we were two years ago, the Huawei Watch 2 and Android Wear 2.0 feel like a huge step forward. However, compared to what Samsung brings to the market with the Gear S3 and what we get with an Apple Watch Series 2, it’s behind.

The Huawei Watch 2 costs $299.99 on Amazon or as low as $273 at Newegg. A significant difference compared to the $400 you pay for the Apple Watch Series 2 or $300 for the Gear S3 Classic and Frontier. For Android fans, the Huawei Watch 2 offers the best choice for non-Samsung phones. Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ owners should definitely pick the Gear S3. Of course iPhone owners should opt for the Apple Watch.

Google is ready to take another shot at the smartwatch. After showing off new features in Android Wear 2.0 back in 2016, LG and Google recently unveiled two new watches with the latest software. However, current owners are wondering when their watch will get the Android Wear 2.0 update.

The brand new LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style are the first Android Wear 2.0 devices, and they’re coming soon. Both are already listed at popular retailers and carriers like Verizon.

LG’s new watches look good, but they’re also pretty expensive. As a result many will keep what they already have. This brings us to the big question. What smartwatches will get updated to Android Wear 2.0 in the near future? A full list can be found below.

LGWatchStyleSport-all

Over the past few years some excellent smartwatches have been released. However, they’re running on old and outdated software, not to mention lacking in features. That’s all about to change though.

Android Wear 2.0 Updates

Without further delay, this is the full list of watches that will get the update to Android Wear 2.0 in the near future.

  • ASUS ZenWatch 2
  • ASUS ZenWatch 3
  • Casio Smart Outdoor Watch
  • Casio PRO TREK Smart
  • Fossil Q Wander
  • Fossil Q Marshal
  • Fossil Q Founder
  • Huawei Watch
  • Huawei Watch Ladies
  • LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE
  • LG Watch Urbane
  • LG G Watch R
  • Moto 360 (2nd Gen.)
  • Moto 360 Sport
  • Michael Kors Access Bradshaw Smartwatch
  • Michael Kors Access Dylan Smartwatch
  • New Balance RunIQ
  • Nixon Mission
  • Polar M600
  • Tag Heuer Connected

Of course some of the most popular watches make the list. Including the newer Moto 360, the ASUS ZenWatch 2/3, anything recent from Huawei and the popular fashionable options from Michael Kors. First generation devices like the original Moto 360 or LG G Watch will be left out. That said, they are pretty old and were released in 2014.

Also, we don’t have an exact timeframe as to when these updates will be released. Previously most watches received updates around the same time, with Google pushing Wear updates out to all. As soon as we have more details or a time table to watch we’ll confirm the details.

Here’s a quick video recently released by Google. It details a few of the many new features you can expect to enjoy on Android Wear 2.0 in the near future.

Once Android Wear 2.0 arrives owners can expect more informative watch faces, and lots of customization or personalization. An improved Google Fit with better workouts, new ways to use apps, and more features like Android Pay on Wear. Additionally, the Google Assistant is now built-in. Meaning users can make the most of every minute, as their watch tells them the time in style.

While the smartwatch market as a whole hasn’t taken off as much as expected, they’re still popular. Samsung offers great watches, and the Apple Watch is still an exciting option for consumers. As a result Google has overhauled their entire user interface for watches and wearable devices.
