Some iPhone users are noticing an improvement after upgrading to the latest version of iOS 16. On the flip side, some iPhone users have run into a variety of bugs and performance issues. Some of these issues have carried over from older iOS software, others are brand new.

How to Fix iOS 16 Problems

Some problems might require a fix from Apple in a future iOS update. Others, you may be able to fix on your own.

iOS Downgrade Status

If you run into bugs or performance issues on iOS 16, you might try downgrading your iPhone’s software in an effort to improve its performance.

Apple’s currently signing on iOS 16.6 which means you can downgrade back to the previous version of iOS 16. Unfortunately, you can’t downgrade to any iOS software older than iOS 16.6.

What’s Next

If your iPhone is struggling on iOS 16.6.1 or an older version of iOS, you’re on your own for the time being.

iOS 16.6.1 was the last known update in Apple’s iOS 16 pipeline, but it looks like the company might be working on a new iOS 16.7 update. If it is, it should roll out in September alongside Apple’s new iOS 17 operating system.

The company will push iOS 17 to the iPhone in mid-to-late September. Unfortunately, Apple will drop support for three older iPhone models: iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus. Those devices will stay on iOS 16.

With iOS 16.7 reportedly on the way, it looks like Apple will continue to support these devices with security patches and occasional bug fixes.

iOS 16.1 Review

If your iPhone is currently running iOS 16.0.3, you’ll see the smallest iOS 16.1 download size.

For iOS 16.0.3 users, the iOS 16.1 download will be around 985 MB. You can expect a similar size for other iPhone models running the previous version of iOS 16.

The exact size of the iOS 16.1 download depends on your iPhone model and the version of iOS it’s currently running. If your device is running an older version of iOS, you’ll likely see a bigger download because your update comes with the changes from the updates you skipped.

If you’re moving up from iOS 16.1, the installation process should take 10 minutes or less to complete. It took about seven minutes to install on an iPhone 12 Pro.

We’ve been using iOS 16.1 on an iPhone 12 Pro for several days now and here’s what we’ve learned about the software’s performance thus far:

Connectivity

• Battery life is stable.
• Wi-Fi connectivity is fast and reliable.
• Bluetooth is working normally.
• GPS and cellular data are both stable.

App Performance

• Third-party apps including Netflix, Dark Sky, Twitter, Slack, Asana, Gmail, Chrome, and Spotify are working fine at the moment.
• First party apps like Safari and Podcasts are also stable.

Speed

• iOS 16.1 feels as fast as iOS 16.0.3.

If you’ve been dealing with bugs and/or performance issues on iOS 16.0.3 or an older version of iOS 16, you should probably install the iOS 16.1 update in the near future.

iOS 16.1 Problems

iOS 16.1 is causing problems for some iPhone users. Some of these problems are brand new, others have carried over from previous versions of iOS.

Apple’s milestone updates (x.x) typically bring new features, enhancements, security patches, and bug fixes to iPhone users and that’s what you get from iOS 16.1.

iCloud Shared Photo Library

• Separate library for seamlessly sharing photos and videos with up to five other people.
• Setup rules allow you to easily contribute past photos based on start date or people in the photos when you set up or join a library.
• Library filters for quickly switching between viewing the Shared Library, your Personal Library, or both libraries together.
• Shared edits and permissions let everyone add, edit, favorite, caption, and delete photos.
• Sharing toggle in Camera lets you choose to send photos you take straight to the Shared Library, or enable a setting to share automatically when other participants are detected nearby using Bluetooth.

Live Activities

• Live Activities from third party apps are available in the Dynamic Island and on the Lock Screen for iPhone 14 Pro models.

Fitness+

• Apple Fitness+ is supported on iPhone even if you don’t have an Apple Watch.

Wallet

• Key sharing enables you to securely share car, hotel room, and other keys in Wallet using messaging apps such as Messages and WhatsApp.

Home

• Matter, the new smart home connectivity standard, is supported enabling a wide variety of smart home accessories to work together across ecosystems.

Clean Energy Charging

• New setting that can try to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available.

Books

• Reader controls are automatically hidden as you start reading.

Bug Fixes

• Fixes an issue where deleted conversations may appear in the conversations list in Messages.
• Fixes an issue where Dynamic Island content is not available when using Reachability.
• Fixes an issue where CarPlay may fail to connect when using a VPN app.

iOS 16.1 Jailbreak

If you still jailbreak, make sure you avoid the iOS 16.1 update.

We don’t expect developers to release a tool that’s compatible with iOS 16 today or at any point in the near future. If you still jailbreak, keep an eye out for new information. We’ll let you know when we learn more.

What’s Next

Apple is reportedly working on an iOS 16.1.1 update and the software is slated to fix lingering bugs. It’s unclear when the software will arrive though we suspect it will land sooner rather than later.

The company’s confirmed a new version of iOS 16 and iOS 16.2 is currently in beta testing. The iOS 16.2 release date is expected to land in December.

iOS 16.2 is a milestone upgrade which means it will bring a mix of new features, bug fixes, and security enhancements to iPhone users.

If you can’t/don’t want to wait for the official release date, you might try downloading the iOS 16.2 beta and see if it helps iron out any issues you’re seeing.
